Canadians deserve a justice system that is fair, respects their Charter rights and helps make our communities safer. A Jagmeet Singh-led government will be a tireless defender of the civil liberties of every Canadian.
BILL C-51 AND PARLIAMENTARY OVERSIGHT
In order to truly protect the civil liberties of all Canadians, Jagmeet calls for a complete repeal of Bill C-51.
As Prime Minister, Jagmeet will also commit to instituting parliamentary oversight of the RCMP and restoring parliamentary oversight of CSIS. This oversight would include the disclosure of Canadian groups and individuals that are targets of surveillance. This parliamentary oversight would also include the ability to veto surveillance that is found to be contrary to the principles of free speech and free association, such as has been the case with surveillance of Idle No More, Black Lives Matter and many environmental groups.
AN INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT FOR CHARTER COMPLIANCE
Jagmeet is deeply concerned by the actions of successive Liberal and Conservative governments, which have ignored warnings about the unconstitutionality of legislation. In order to reverse this, Jagmeet will:
Establish an independent assessment body in Parliament to conduct Charter compliance reviews for all new legislative and policy proposals.
Provide stable funding and resources to the Court Challenges Program which provides financial assistance for important court cases that advance language and equality rights guaranteed under Canada's Constitution.
