NANAIMO, B.C. – Sheila Malcolmson, MP for Nanaimo—Ladysmith and the NDP’s Critic for Status of Women, has announced her support for Jagmeet Singh’s bid to lead the New Democratic Party of Canada.
“Last week when Jagmeet Singh hosted a townhall in Nanaimo, I felt a surge of hope, inspiration and excitement about how our party could connect and lead.” Malcolmson noted. “He responded to members’ complex questions on issues of social, economic and environmental justice with language anyone could understand. And he showed how women and youth are at the centre of his leadership teams, which our party needs.”
“This moment of lift-off took me back to when the 2012 leadership race first inspired me to run as an MP. We'll need that energy and enthusiasm if we hope to defeat Trudeau in 2019.” Malcolmson continued. “That's why I'm supporting Jagmeet. His positive campaign has attracted tens of thousands of new members to our movement, and he can inspire voters to embrace New Democrat values and policies.”
“Jagmeet also reaches out in a way we need. Jagmeet’s clear ability to use his large online following to break through the noise and communicate his message of “love and courage” in Canadian (and even international) media shows that he’s got reach. Jagmeet’s leadership is our best chance to implement our progressive agenda. I’m truly excited about what we could do together with Jagmeet as our leader,” said Malcolmson.
NDP Leadership Candidate Jagmeet Singh was humbled to accept MP Sheila Malcolmson’s endorsement. “It is such an honour to have Sheila’s support. She is an amazing bridge-builder, who as an MP and a local government official has spent more than a decade bringing diverse communities together for the common good. Sheila is a team-builder, a leader on women’s issues and an expert on green energy. I’m so excited to have her on our team." said Jagmeet.
